I did a composition database for several instruments which contains short motives and/or melodies, all the way down to single notes.
With this material I started recording musicians, but not only the audio but also video images. Then I took the recorded material and started doing simple over layering of the melody/motive in the video editing to create a composition.

In short, musical motives were recorded, edited, copied, pasted, and worked to create a composition.
