performance nr.2 (Isländisches Praeludium)

A interactive piece for musician (bass clarinet + piano) and visual artist. The musician works from several sources; any traditional score selected in connection to the project each time, a graphic notation, and direct reaction of the visuals created by the artist in the performance itself. And the artist does a pre-colour analyse of the traditional score and follows the structure of the graphic notation, as well as interacting with the musician/music in the performance itself.

Notes for performance:

1. The musician does not only follow what is written down and/or indicated on his score, but also takes just as full notice of what the painter/artist is doing, and translates that also into the improvisation process.

In return, the painter/artist takes what the musician is creating and translates, or transforms, that into a visual image.

In doing this the composition will never have the same outcome from a performance, the outcome will always be different.

The focus is on the process which is created in each performance.

2. Accompanying the graphic notation should always be a traditional music score.
This music score can either be an original composition by the performers, an arrangement, or any classical (or non-classical) score.

The score that is chosen should be used as an inspiration, and a guideline to the improvisation of the graphic notation.
It is possible to use as much and as little as one note from the score, – the most important is that the score gives the mood to the performance.

3. The graphic notation can be played on any instrument, with the chose of one performer or more.

Each performance should last about 30 minutes.

The graphic notation can be read left to right or from top to bottom.

Each box gives a possibility of introducing a new motive, as well as indicate time and dynamics by their size. More than one box can be played/performed at the same time.

4. Floating sounds and long notes will be visualised in horizontal forms, and rhythm and chords will be visualised vertically.

Colours used will be chosen from an analyse of the musical score accompanying the graphic notation. Sections will be colour coded based on their dominant tonality or individual notes.
