About Research Dossiers

When artists engage in research they often also need to share their research findings through journal publications. Getting one’s writing accepted in a journal, however, requires basic academic writing skills and the ability to set out clear and concise arguments
‘Research Dossiers’ provides Transmedia students with a crash course in academic writing and publishing. The course guides students in the practical exercise of writing a structured academic essay around an argument that can be supported by their own artistic research practice. In addition to writing a research proposal in the first year and a research dossier in the second year, the course includes plenary presentations, individual meetings and a peer-reviewing process.

Michel van Dartel is curator at V2_, Institute for the Unstable Media in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Besides his appointment at V2_, Michel is co-curator of the Dutch Electronic Art Festival and ARTICLE Biennial of Electronic Art, advisor at the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, Willem de Kooning Academy, and Hanza Hogeschool, associate editor at the Journal for Artistic Research, and a member of music group The Rose Frustrates. Michel holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence and an MSc in Cognitive Psychology.

The workshop stands under the Topic “mistake culture / Error”. An error is an inevitable result of an experiment.

The error points to the progress, he is the result and what are essentially the proof of evolution.
The error is the symptom of artistic idea.
The deviation , the errors, the irregularity is an experiment to give the artwork a breath of live.

It is failure / errors that guides evolution; perfection offers no possibilities for improvement.

Art was seen as perfect and smooth. Spots and cracks and damage and broken were not discovered until it was to make works of living. Confusion and errors are made to question calculated things.

What is an error?
Can you create and abstract the classification of an error?
Why errors happen in a system and destroy systems?

The statistics says 78 Procent of errors are based on human errors.

Human error denotes the misconduct of people. An error comes not only alone, he comes in a “chains of errors” and often leads to collapse of entire systems an leading to a catastrophe such as long-range aircraft crash or power failure.

However, an error is not only negative.

Errors have its own systematic and system.
An error was not created by chance and meaningless.
He has a meaningful, comprehensive structure in him self.

In the art and the creative areas but also in innovative areas receive error a productive role.

Q-O2 is a structurally subsidized workspace for experimental contemporary music and sound art since 2006 and has its own space in the Brussels canal zone. The workspace developed out of the contemporary music ensemble Q-O2.
In practice, Q-O2 operates at three levels: it offers working residencies to artists; carries out projects in collaboration with national and international arts organizations; and holds performances and concerts in its own space.
In musical terms Q-O2 explores mainly three lines of approach: acoustic and electronic improvisation and composed music as well as installations and sound art. Through its conceptual preoccupations Q-O2 finds easily points of access to other disciplines.

www.q-o2.be

Julia Eckhardt, born in Berlin, is altviolinist in the field of composed and improvised contemporary music. After her studies viola in Rotterdam and Brussels, she worked with several chamber music ensembles and was a member of the National Orchestra of Belgium. Since 1996 she is artistic responsible for Q-O2, first ensemble for contemporary experimental and improvised music and since 2006 workspace for music and soundart. Since 2001, Eckhardt is a member of Incidental Music (with Manfred Werder and Normisa Pereiera da Silva), an international ensemble for conceptual music. She lives and works in Brussels. www.q-o2.be

Murphy’s miserable space adventures

THE BOOK

Charlotte Dumortier graduated recently at the Sint Lukas Hogeschool in Brussels. Her master thesis was “Murphy’s miserable space adventures”, a cartoon that takes place in infinite space, and stars the non-hero Murphy, who has to submit to the laws of the cosmos. The cartoon is without text because more often than not, Murphy is on a solitary mission and space, being devoid of air, is completely soundless. The repetitive and simple story line allows Charlotte to experiment at will with color, framing and page layout.

Charlotte Dumortier, Murphy’s miserable space adventures, published by Oogachtend.

THE EXPOSITION

At the exposition of the cultural center De Warande, Murphy’s two-dimensional paper universe is implemented spatially. Not through predictable interactive gimmicks, but in a visually surprising way that puts the existing dimensions of space and time in perspective.
