“Radical and surprising things have been attempted in music. Various techniques have been presented that make use of accidents, create chaos, or develop new kinds of feeling through technology. Many methods for transcending the self have been tried. When I played music with Kim Suk Chul, a Korean shaman who plays traditional Korean instruments, I discovered another method—relaxation.

Normally, a jazz musician can play improvisationally for thirty minutes at most. His playing time is determined by his stamina. As the performance continues, it takes a toll on him physically. He plays music to express himself, and the performance doesn’t exist if he doesn’t play.

In contrast, the performance of Kim Suk Chul and his group lasted for many hours, and they seemed to be in better and better physical condition. When I participated in their performance, I felt happy and satisfied just being there, even when I wasn’t playing an instrument. I realized that in his performance he easily went beyond self-expression.

Tetsu Saitoh has been involving himself with dance, Butoh, theatre, fine arts, poetry, calligraphy, Japanese traditional music, court music, Noh theatre, classical and contemporary music, tango especially Astor Piazzolla’s music, jazz, improvised music, Korean and Asian shamanism.

The title and theme of this eleventh edition of Artefact is The Social Contract. This term has been used in political and philosophical theories since the 17th century, but still emerges regularly today, in interviews with politicians, political party programs, debates, … Even the early adopters of the social contract theory, such as John Locke, Thomas Hobbes and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, used and interpreted the concept in different ways. The classical interpretation concerns the relation between the individual as a citizen and a political entity, in which the individual sacrifices part of his freedom and power in order for the state to offer for instance safety and social and economic security. But what is the position of the social contract in our current times of crisis in a globalized world?

One of the festival’s main questions is whether we can renegotiate or reform those ‘contracts’. Can we cancel them, rewrite them? The programme focuses on different forms of resistance and imagination. With exhibitions, performances, debates and meetings with international artists, we look for the position and alternatives for The Social Contract in our contemporary information and network society.

About Research Dossiers

When artists engage in research they often also need to share their research findings through journal publications. Getting one’s writing accepted in a journal, however, requires basic academic writing skills and the ability to set out clear and concise arguments
‘Research Dossiers’ provides Transmedia students with a crash course in academic writing and publishing. The course guides students in the practical exercise of writing a structured academic essay around an argument that can be supported by their own artistic research practice. In addition to writing a research proposal in the first year and a research dossier in the second year, the course includes plenary presentations, individual meetings and a peer-reviewing process.

Michel van Dartel is curator at V2_, Institute for the Unstable Media in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Besides his appointment at V2_, Michel is co-curator of the Dutch Electronic Art Festival and ARTICLE Biennial of Electronic Art, advisor at the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, Willem de Kooning Academy, and Hanza Hogeschool, associate editor at the Journal for Artistic Research, and a member of music group The Rose Frustrates. Michel holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence and an MSc in Cognitive Psychology.
